New grants for electric cars will encourage EV use but will that be good for the environment?

Encouraging people to reduce their vehicle usage, or down-size their cars would have a definite and measurable reduction in emissions (and CO2), but although EVs are ‘zero emission vehicals’ there is a big debate about the overall emissions due to EVs – see the comments on the Guardian article. They are definitely better for urban air quality and effective in reducing emissions in stop-start driving but there is little evidence that they reduce emissions in mixed driving. An of course they take energy to build, maintain and dispose of.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a great advocate of EVs having worked in the field earlier in my career, but we need a consistent policy and clear information.
